I was watching The View this morning, and Whoopi (I wonder if her parents get the “making Whoopi” joke every other day) said something interesting: back when women didn’t have mirrors, their self-esteem was higher.
I don’t know how you measure self esteem, but I believe it. Can you imagine if no one owned mirrors? I realize that in a world of digital photos and camera phones, you can’t escape your own reflection, but its an interesting thing to think about.
I think if someone took all of my mirrors away I would become MORE self conscious, wondering constantly what I looked like and if I had food on my face or a big boog on my cheek, but if I grew up without mirrors, I think I wouldn’t be so concerned with my appearance.
Everyone else would still know what you looked like- good or bad- but I think if I had no idea what they were seeing I wouldn’t care.
Blissful ignorance, I guess.
There have been days where I think I look good, and walk by a mirror and realize my hair is sticking straight up, or I smeared mascara all over my face and look like Tara Reid after a night on the town. My reaction? Embarrassment. Self conscienceness.
I think the closest I’ve gotten to going reflectionless, is camping for a week. and you know what? I didnt even think about what I looked like.
I think we focus on the bad in the mirror more than the good. How often do you say, “Damn, I have a nice ass?” as opposed to “Ugh, my skin/nose/forehead/belly is not cute.”
Whoopi says she doesn’t own a mirror. I don’t think I believe that. I guess it doesn’t matter if she does or not. She goes to work everyday and has someone do her hair and make-up, so she knows she looks alright.
Im just rambling now.
Any vampires out there? Anyone know what its like to go without a reflection? Anyone give up their mirrors for Lent?
